Starting the new year resting on canvas

Well the new year has certainly started with a bang! 🙂

January can be a very quiet month for me whilst people get back into the routine of work after the Christmas break, but this year has begun with a flurry of requests for commissions, which is the best sort of start as far as I’m concerned.

The main one at the moment requires a certain size of block canvas which I’ve had to order, and have the artists joy of looking through the artists materials catalogues looking at the different acrylics picking out favoured bright colours, finding varnishing brushes, and the particular canvas I wanted as well as seeing colourful pastel papers and  my usual watercolour pads but leaving them for subsequent orders. Knowing that the items I choose will go towards future artworks is always exciting, taking the basic materials and making something special.

The painting  in question that I’m ordering the canvas for is to be the sort I love doing the best – with the request from the female client for it to be “Tastefully erotic, so that I can put it on my lounge wall and my Mum won’t be upset”. She had told me a couple of weeks ago that she wanted to leave it til this week for me to take the photos of her and her husband for the painting. When we met up, with me brandishing my camera, I left it to the couple to see what poses they wanted for the picture, seeing if they would need me to advise, but they didn’t. They happily went into a number of poses, sitting, standing, cuddling, him shirtless but with jeans on, she in her sexy underwear, and then topless. Click, click, click as I took the photos. Then showed the photos I’dHunk in blue jeans (2) taken so that they could see what they looked like. “That one!” she said straight away, knowing instantly which one she wanted. I smiled, and nodded, and we took some more just to see if they could improve on it, but no, that was the one, most definitely that she wanted. We discussed what medium they wanted – oils? watercolours? acrylics? and then size ? “Like that mirror on the wall there” she said pointing, and I did a quick measurement with my hands knowing that I can work out the size of it to a near enough measurement, and she agreed with the figures I called out. And then asked if she wanted it on board? paper? canvas? “Ohhh canvas!” she said excited at the idea, and then asked if she wanted to frame it, or me have it done for them, or have it on a block canvas that didn’t need a frame? “What’s that?” she asked puzzled at the phrase, and I explained that its a thick canvas that stands out from the wall, and she said “Yes! That one!” knowing that was what she wanted. I always like dealing with people who know what they want, although I still have to give so many permutations for a picture – size, medium, price range – before I can start it. I made notes as I asked her what she wanted as the background, whether they wanted their jewellery included, what they wanted enhancing (since there is no woman in the world who is totally happy with her body!). And the last question is if there is a deadline they want it for? There was in this case, but the deadline is a long way off so there’s plenty of time to do it. But I want to get going on it, since the image is a really sexy but tasteful one, its got a lot of lovely lines in it, with affection shown in their natural pose, lots of flesh on show, but very elegantly tasteful like this one “Hunk in blue jeans” that I did for another commission a few years ago. Just what she wanted! And I’m going to love doing it for them!

But that won’t be the first picture I do, no, there’s another I will have to do before then……
