Legacies

As I am writing this, it’s just been announced with shock to all hearing it that the American singer Prince has died at the relatively young age of 57. I was actually in the process of writing this blog post about Victoria Wood who died yesterday (with even more for me shock when I heard it) at the not much older age of 62. Whilst I like some of Princes more famous songs I am more of a fan of Victoria Wood with her talent for English Northern humour, and her fabulous insightful observations on the quirkiness of people creating comedy in everyday life.  I loved most of what she did and can still laugh outloud when I watch Dinner Ladies and listen to her hilarious one-liners when she does stand-up. I’ve watched her progress over the years from when she first came on the television in 1976, and since then has greatly entertained us all with her songs, laughter, writing and acting abilities.

And whilst it is incredibly sad that she has died, along with so many talented singers, actors, and comedians already this year (and I know so many people are reeling at what seems to be at least one celebrity death every week so far in this strange year) what I am aware of, and want to comment on is the legacy of what they have left behind.

The shared joy of laughter with Victoria Wood, and the musical talents of Prince and David Bowie, the acting abilities of Alan Rickman…. they all leave behind a legacy for us all to still enjoy their talents even though they are no longer living, they live on through the internet, and television, DVDs and downloads. We can still enjoy them in the same way we always have and that is so heart warming…..
